Leopold III was King of Belgium from 1934 to 1951. Born in Brussels on 3 November 1901, he was the son of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth. He ascended the throne after Albert I''s death in 1934. He married Princess Astrid in 1926; she died in a car accident in 1935. Their children included Princess Joséphine-Charlotte (1927–2005) and Baudouin I (1930–1993), who later became king. In 1951, after a period of political controversy over his wartime conduct and role, Leopold abdicated in favor of Baudouin.
