Masik Krishna Janmashtami is a monthly Vaishnava observance honoring Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha in each lunar month, including January 2026. It draws on scriptural accounts such as the Bhagavata Purana describing Krishna's birth at Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, his miraculous escape from Kamsa, and his childhood pastimes, which devotees recall through prayers, bhajans, and readings to deepen devotion.
A small home puja is performed: bathe the Krishna idol, offer milk, yogurt, ghee, fruits, flowers and butter, decorate the altar, fast till midnight, and chant Krishna bhajans or the Hare Krishna mantra.
The date and timing follow the Hindu Panchang: when the Krishna Paksha Ashtami tithi lines up with suitable nakshatra and muhurat, celebrations may occur on different nights or dawns in different places, with regional rituals varying.
