American rapper, singer, and producer, best known for his work with Bun B as a founding member of the Underground Kingz (UGK). In January 2002, Pimp C was sentenced to eight years in prison for violating his probation by ignoring his sentence to community service stemming from an earlier aggravated assault charge. His arrest was widely protested by the hip hop community, who along with Bun B, immediately initiated a grassroots "Free Pimp C" campaign. While Pimp C was in prison, Rap-A-Lot Records released "Sweet James Jones Stories" in 2005, most of which consisted of unreleased freestyle recordings. Pimp C spent the later portion of his sentence at the Terrell Unit in Brazoria County, Texas and was transferred to the Huntsville Unit a week prior to his release. On 30 December 2005, Pimp C was released from prison and placed on parole until December 2007. On 11 July 2006, Pimp C released his debut solo album, Pimpalation. Pimp C was found dead in a hotel in West Hollywood, California, on 4 December 2007. Like many other Southern rappers, Pimp C frequently referenced the recreational consumption of "syrup" (also known as Purple Drank) or "lean" in his music. Link to Wikipedia biography Read less

Pimp C, born Chad Lamont Butler, was an American rapper and producer best known as one half of the pioneering Southern hip hop duo UGK (Underground Kingz) alongside Bun B. His distinctive and influential production style, characterized by heavy, slowed-down funk and soul samples, helped shape the sound of Southern rap. His raw and explicit lyrics focused on life in Port Arthur, Texas, dealing with themes of poverty, drug dealing, and Southern culture.
UGK formed in the late 1980s and released their debut album, Too Hard to Swallow, in 1992. They gained significant recognition with subsequent albums like Ridin' Dirty (1996) and Super Tight (1994), solidifying their place in the Southern rap scene. Pimp C's production became a hallmark of UGK's sound, and he also contributed his rapping skills, known for his unique flow and delivery.
Pimp C's career was interrupted by a prison sentence for an aggravated assault charge, serving time from 2002 to 2005. During this time, Bun B continued to represent UGK and kept Pimp C's name alive. Upon his release, Pimp C returned to music, releasing his solo album Pimpalation in 2006. UGK reunited and released their self-titled album in 2007, which featured the hit single "International Players Anthem (I Choose You)" with OutKast.
Tragically, Pimp C died on December 4, 2007, at the age of 33, due to complications from sleep apnea and codeine overdose. His death was a significant loss to the hip-hop community, particularly in the South.
Pimp C's influence on Southern rap and hip-hop production continues to be felt today. His unique style and sound have inspired countless artists, and his legacy as a pioneer of Southern hip hop remains strong. Bun B has continued to honor his memory and keep UGK's music alive.
