Born: March 2, 1924, in Scheveningen, Netherlands.
Co Westerik (1924-2018) was a prominent Dutch painter, draftsman, and graphic artist known for his distinctive surrealist style, blending realism with unexpected and dreamlike elements. His works often featured distorted perspectives, fragmented figures, and unsettling juxtapositions, exploring themes of human existence, alienation, and the subconscious.
Westerik's early work showed influences of magic realism. Over time, his art evolved to incorporate more personal and symbolic imagery. His mature style is characterized by a meticulous technique and a precise rendering of details, often combined with incongruous or absurd elements, creating a sense of unease and mystery. He frequently depicted everyday objects and scenes, transforming them into unexpected and thought-provoking compositions.
He was a member of the Dutch artistic group "Realisten," and his work was exhibited widely throughout the Netherlands and internationally, garnering critical acclaim and earning him numerous awards and honors. His paintings are held in major museum collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
