The much-dreaded ailment, cancer, has spread worldwide as one of the most prominent life-threatening diseases over the last few decades. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer accounts for nearly 10 million deaths each year, making it the second leading cause of death globally. It is not a singular disease but a collection of related diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body.
Main causes include prolonged exposure to carcinogens (such as tobacco, alcohol, certain chemicals), genetic predisposition, chronic infections (like HPV and Hepatitis B/C), dietary factors (processed foods, additives), and environmental triggers like radiation and air pollution. Psychological stress and disturbed circadian rhythms are emerging areas of research as contributing factors to immune system dysregulation and cellular mutation.
Environmental and water pollution—laden with heavy metals and hazardous elements—are also known catalysts.
