Biography

Who is Carrieri Raffaele?

Italian writer and poet. In his teens he travelled to Albania, Montenegro and other Balkan countries, then as a sailor on board merchant ships, he travelled to ports in the Mediterranean Sea, Europe and North Africa. Returning to Italy, he was a tax collector in Palermo for 2 years. In 1923 he moved to Paris where he mingled with important avant-garde intellectuals. In 1930, he moved to Milan and began working as an art critic for several newspapers including The New York Times. Carrieri also published numerous monographs of contemporary artists: Modigliani, Picasso, and so on. After the war, he published a series of collections of verse to critical acclaim, winning numerous awards including the 1953 Viareggio Prize for the book "Il Trovatore."
