Upapada Lagna Calculator Find your Upapada Lagna, with every step of the count

The Upapada Lagna (UL) is the Arudha of the 12th house in a Vedic birth chart, a method from the Jaimini tradition. Astrologers who use it read its sign, its lord and the 2nd sign from it for themes of marriage and the spouse. This calculator finds it from your date, time and place of birth and shows the count.

Enter your birth details

Use the time from your birth certificate if you have it. The Upapada is counted from your 12th house, which depends on your Lagna, so it needs an accurate birth time.

Local clock time at the place of birth.

What the calculator shows

Everything comes from one chart calculation, the same one the Lagna calculator uses.

  • Upapada sign and house

The sign of your Upapada Lagna, its sign lord and the house it occupies, counted from your Lagna.

  • 12th house and its lord

The sign of your 12th house, the planet that rules it and the sign and house that planet occupies.

  • The count, step by step

How many signs lie from the 12th house to its lord, and the same count onward from the lord, with each sign listed.

  • 2nd from the Upapada

The sign after the Upapada, its lord and any planets in it. Astrologers read this sign together with the Upapada.

  • Chart with UL marked

Your Lagna chart in North Indian or South Indian style, with the Upapada Lagna shown as UL in its house.

  • A note when methods differ

If your count lands where some books apply a further step, the result says so and names the sign they would show.

How the Upapada Lagna is counted

Start at your 12th house and count the signs to the sign its lord occupies, counting the 12th house as 1. Then count the same number of signs onward from the lord, counting the lord's sign as 1. The sign you land on is your Upapada Lagna.

If the 12th lord sits in the 6th house, the count is 7, and 7 signs on from the 6th house brings you back to the 12th house. DKSCORE keeps that sign as the Upapada.

Why the birth time matters

The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, and your 12th house moves with it. A different 12th house has a different lord, so a birth time that is off by an hour can give a different Upapada.

If the result says your Lagna is close to the edge of its sign, check your birth time before relying on the Upapada.

How DKSCORE calculates the Upapada Lagna

  • Sidereal chart, whole-sign houses

Your chart uses the Lahiri ayanamsa. The sign of your Lagna is the first house, and the 12th house is the sign before it.

  • Mars and Saturn as lords

Vrishchika is ruled by Mars and Kumbha by Saturn. Ketu and Rahu are not used as co-lords of those signs.

  • Inclusive counting

Both counts include the sign they start from, so a 12th lord in the 12th house gives a count of 1.

  • No 10th-sign step

Some books move the Upapada to the 10th sign from the result when it lands on the 12th house or the 7th from it. DKSCORE keeps the sign the count lands on.

FAQ

Upapada Lagna calculator: questions and answers

What is the Upapada Lagna in Vedic astrology?
The Upapada Lagna, or UL, is the Arudha of the 12th house, a method from the Jaimini tradition. Astrologers who use it read its sign, its lord and the 2nd sign from it for themes of marriage and the spouse.
How do I calculate my Upapada Lagna?
Find the sign of your 12th house and its lord. Count the signs from the 12th house to the lord's sign, counting the 12th house as 1. Then count the same number onward from the lord's sign, counting that sign as 1. For example, with a Karka Lagna the 12th house is Mithuna and its lord is Mercury. If Mercury is in Mesha, the count is 11, and 11 signs from Mesha is Kumbha.
What if the count lands on the 12th house or the 7th from it?
DKSCORE keeps that sign as the Upapada Lagna. Some books and calculators apply an exception here and move to the 10th sign from it, so they can show a different result. When this applies to your chart, the result says so and names the sign they would show.
Which lord is used for Vrishchika and Kumbha?
Mars for Vrishchika and Saturn for Kumbha. Some traditions also consider Ketu and Rahu as co-lords of these signs. This calculator does not.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. The Upapada is counted from your 12th house, which depends on your Lagna, and the Lagna changes sign about every two hours. A wrong birth time can give a different Upapada.
Why does another calculator show a different Upapada Lagna?
There are three common reasons: the 10th-sign exception, using Ketu or Rahu as a lord of Vrishchika or Kumbha, and a different ayanamsa, which can change your Lagna near the edge of a sign. DKSCORE uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, Mars and Saturn as lords, and no exception.
Is the Upapada Lagna the same as the Darapada?
No. The Upapada is the Arudha of the 12th house. The Darapada, or A7, is the Arudha of the 7th house. This calculator shows the Upapada.
Are my birth details saved?
Your details are used only to calculate the result. They are not saved to an account or profile, and they are never added to the page address or sent to analytics.
