American actress with a remarkable career start, accepted at her first audition in an acclaimed film, "The Ice Storm." Raised in the Midwest, Kate attended a national modeling and talent convention in New York City where she met a talent manager who encouraged her to come to Los Angeles -- on her very first professional audition, she dazzled the casting director who put her in the feature film. During her senior year of high school, encouraged by the success of her first venture, Holmes turned down an audition for "Dawson’s Creek" because she was scheduled to perform as Lola in her schools production of "Damn Yankees." Instead, she sent in a videotape from Toledo - landing the series regular role of Joey Potter. The youngest of five kids, the lanky 5’ 11" Holmes is the daughter of a lawyer and a homemaker. She grew up in a stable, middle-class household where her supportive parents attentively shepherded her through the earliest stages of her career. She began modeling while in high school. "Dawsons" was a ratings success for the fledgling WB network and it made Holmes an instant teenage star. Her first film after the TV role, "Disturbing Behavior," was a box office flop but in her next film, "Go," she dropped her good-girl image to reach critical acclaim. Postponing college, Holmes moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, not far from the set of Dawsons Creek. Off the set she pals around with her castmates and boyfriend Chris Klein, and indulges her cravings for Starbucks lattes and Jelly Bellies. She was accepted to New Yorks Columbia University, where she plans to major in English, but deferred her enrollment until her acting schedule becomes more settled. She laughs easily and often, conducts herself with a poise beyond her years, and is probably the only teen princess around who blushes when pressed for details about her love life. She soon after was spotted with Tom Cruise and they confirmed their relationship, becoming engaged on June 17, 2005 when he proposed to her atop the Eiffel Tower. She announced her decision to become a Scientologist, taking on her new beaus belief system. By October, they revealed that she was having his baby. Holmes gave birth to a daughter named Suri, on April 18, 2006 in the Los Angeles area. In a well-publicized fairy-tale wedding at an Italian castle, Holmes and Tom Cruise married on November 18, 2006 in Bracciano, Italy at about 6 PM local time. On June 29, 2012, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in New York after five years of marriage. Following the announcement, those close to Holmes stated that she believed she had reason to fear that Cruise would abduct Suri, and also feared intimidation by the Church of Scientology. On July 9, 2012, attorneys for the couple announced the couple signed a divorce settlement. This was the first divorce for Holmes and the third for Cruise. Holmes has custody of Suri.
