N Tiwari began his political journey as a socialist leader, participating in the Indian independence movement. He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1957 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Congress party. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three times: 1976-1977, 1984-1985, and 1988-1989. Later, he played a key role in the formation of Uttarakhand, becoming its first Chief Minister in 2002.
