Nilsson Birgit Biography

Swedish soprano opera singer who received her first operatic contract in 1947 and sang at the Metropolitan Opera on 18 December 1959. She sang at weddings and funerals for ten years before receiving her first big break. Her family needed her on the farm when she was young, but she broke away anyway to study in Stockholm. Her father objected, but her mother funded her with a legacy. Nilsson married Swedish restaurateur Bertil Niklasson on 10 September 1949. She died on 25 December 2005 in Vastra Karup, Sweden, aged 87. Before she died she named Placido Domingo the recipient of the first prize in her name, to be awarded after her death, for "unrivaled contributions to the world of opera." Domingo was notified of the $1 million award in October 2009. Link to Wikipedia biography
