British double agent, a master spy and traitor, the mysterious "third man" whose unmasking as Soviet agent in 1963 rocked the empire. Born to a prominent English family and educated at some of the best schools of the nation, he was so valued as an espionage expert by the British secret service that at one point he was being groomed to become chief of the agency. Philby fed secrets to the Soviet Union for 26 years before he defected. Provided for by the government, he lived out his last 18 years in Moscow in a four-room apartment and a generous KGB benefits paycheck. No longer a valuable employee, he lived as a recluse, disillusioned with communism and troubled by drink. In 1970, he married Rufina Pukhova. Philby died on 11 May 1988 and he was honored by Russia in 1990 by having his picture on a postage stamp. Link to Wikipedia biography Read less
