Gay and born Jewish, he is suspected of having been a Nazi collaborator, although he also made a living helping Jewish families escape to the French Unoccupied Zone. A kleptomaniac and alcoholic, he was discharged from the military for sexual misconduct. Most of his works were autobiographical.
