He was awarded a doctorate in history in 1967 and a doctorate in letters and human sciences a decade later. He is the author and/or co-author of 20 books. In one of his books, La Malheur du Siècle: Communisme, Nazisme et l’Unicité de la Shoah in English A Century of Horrors: Communism, Nazism, and the Uniqueness of the Shoah, the historian turns to theology as the only resource that can shed even feeble illumination on how we remember ideologies responsible for incalculable destruction. Une Génération (1987), winner of Prix d’Historie of the Académie Française, and L’Image Interdite: Une Historie Intellectuelle de l’Iconoclasme (1994), awarded both the Grand Prix d’Historie Chateaubriand-La Vallée aux Loups and the Médaille de Fondation Michel Perret. Published in English to wide acclaim as The Forbidden Image: An Intellectual History of Iconoclasm (2000), it traces the privileging and prohibition of religious images over a span of two and a half millennia in the West. Besancon Alain birth chart analysis for Ascendant

In Vedic astrology, the natal lagna (ascendant) plays a crucial role in shaping an individual's personality and life path. When the natal lagna is in Libra, the person is typically characterized by a strong sense of balance, harmony, and justice. Libra ascendants are often diplomatic, charming, and social, with a natural ability to mediate and bring people together. They are usually aesthetically inclined and value beauty and elegance in their surroundings. The presence of Swati nakshatra in the Libra ascendant further amplifies certain traits. Swati is ruled by the deity Vayu, the god of wind, and is associated with independence, flexibility, and adaptability. Individuals with Swati nakshatra rising may possess a free-spirited nature, with a strong desire for personal freedom and independence. They often exhibit a calm demeanor and may have a unique ability to adapt to changing circumstances, much like the wind. In this scenario, the lagna lord Venus is placed in the 8th house in Taurus, its own sign, which adds another layer to the interpretation. The 8th house is often associated with transformation, mysteries, and hidden aspects of life. Venus in Taurus indicates a strong affinity for comfort, luxury, and material pleasures. It suggests that the individual's transformation and growth may come through experiences related to wealth, sensuality, and deep emotional connections. The placement of Venus in Mrigasira nakshatra, ruled by Mars, introduces a quest for knowledge and exploration. Mrigasira is symbolized by a deer's head, representing curiosity and the pursuit of new experiences. This suggests that the individual may have a strong desire to seek out hidden truths and may be drawn to research, investigation, or esoteric subjects. Overall, this combination indicates a person who is balanced and diplomatic, with a deep appreciation for beauty and harmony. Their life may involve significant transformations related to material and emotional realms, driven by an innate curiosity and desire for exploration.
