Biography

Serbian politician, president on 10/05/2000 with the overthrow of Slobadan Milosevic. A soft-spoken legal scholar with little political experience, he rode a wave of popular demand to victory after the 13 brutal years of damage pounded onto his neighbors and his own people by Milosevic. The son of a judge and a homemaker, Kustunica graduated from Belgrade University school of law in 1966 with good grades and a reputation for keeping his word. Nonetheless, he was fired from the school faculty in 1974 for unpopular political transgressions. He worked at the social sciences research institute and gradually became involved in politics himself, founding the Democratic party of Serbia in 1992. He is committed to democracy as an ideal for Serbian nationalism and seeks to resolve conflict by peaceful means.
