Belgian painter. His paintings of the 1940s were in the tradition of Flemish Expressionism. In the 1950s he practised an informal abstraction. Following a trip to Greece in 1961 the work became more austere. He visited the USA in 1964 and subsequently became the best-known Belgian Pop artist. He used images from the mass media, predominantly of women, often with a strongly erotic, voyeuristic flavour, and frequently introduced lesbian themes. In 1975 he made a series of murals entitled Thema for the Montgomery Metro station in Brussels. There is a museum dedicated to his work in the château at Gordes near Avignon. He died 10 February 1998. Link to Wikipedia biography Read less
